Our Enterprise Activities
Featured Project: Coasters Café
Completed in January 2008, Eastfield rent office was converted by Scarborough Borough Council into a modern and bright cafe with seating for 30 people. Coasters Cafe was opened by Caroline Flint MP (former Minister for Yorkshire and Humber) and it is run by Coast & Moors Voluntary Action with support from a number of funders.
Our aims are:
· To provide a meeting place and focal-point for the Eastfield community
· To provide opportunities for local people to gain skills and employment
· To promote healthy eating
Coasters has provided 3 local people with paid employment as well as providing opportunities for volunteers and Student Trainees from the local school. To date 14 local residents have volunteered including Eastfield resident Andy Green, a qualified chef. Andy’s health problems have prevented him from gaining employment but he uses his skills as a volunteer at the Cafe.
“I am doing something useful and I feel valued, which is good for my self-esteem. The cafe is in a great spot and it’s a nice comfortable environment used by many local people.”
Cafe Manager, Gill Kirby has put together an appetising menu combining fresh, healthy choices, daily specials and her excellent home-baking, all at reasonable prices. Coasters serves only fair-trade tea and coffee – we recommend the Layered Latté!
In the coming year we aim to further develop our services and products. We always welcome your suggestions and recipes.
“Being a volunteer at the cafe has given another dimension to my life.” – Andy Green
